Pie lovers unite!

We all have our opinions, especially when it comes to food. But one thing we can all agree on is that there's nothing quite as spectacular as a perfectly baked pie. This pub classic has its roots all the way back in Ancient Egypt, when pies were simple, filled pastries known as "galettes", made from oats, rye, wheat, or barley. The Romans later developed savoury meat pies, using thick, inedible pastry solely for preservation, a practice continued in medieval Britain, during which time pie crusts were known as "coffins". However, as fat and sugar became more available and affordable, these thick, disposable containers made way for delicious, flaky casings. As such, pastry-making quickly became an art form.

Today, pies both sweet and savoury are universally loved from north to south – we even have a whole week dedicated to them every year in early March, so mark your calendars for British Pie Week

Steak, chicken, mushroom and more

The marvellous thing about pies is the sheer variety of fillings available. So, are you a sweet or savoury person? More to the point, what constitutes a pie? Some argue that a filling must be entirely encased in pastry, whereas others are perfectly happy to add a pastry lid and call it a day. And don't get us started on the great shepherd's/cottage pie debate!

When it comes to savoury fillings, there will always be the classics – hearty steak & ale, creamy chicken & leek and earthy mushroom. Sure, there's plenty of room for pie-based innovation, but you know what they say – if it ain't broke, etc.

A round table filled with main dishes, including a burger with fries, a pie with mash and peas. Several drinks—such as beer, rosé wine, and a bottle of cider —are placed around the table. The hands and arms of multiple people seated together are visible as they reach toward their food and raise their drinks.

A pie on its own is a thing of beauty, but a pie served with all the trimmings is hard to beat. Buttery, velvety mash is a classic, reminiscent of comforting, home-cooked meals that fill your soul as well as your belly. Thick-cut, fluffy chips, on the other hand, are more common in pubs and restaurants, perfect for dipping into sauce or gravy. In terms of veg, it's largely a matter of preference. You might opt for a heaping mountain of either garden or mushy peas for a bit of greenery. Or even steamed broccoli for a little touch of freshness to balance the buttery pastry and rich filling of the pie itself.

Luckily, most of our pies come with the option of buttered mash or chips, so take your pick!

Pies and Pints

Let's be honest, the best side to a delicious pie is always going to be a cracking pint – this timeless duo that has sustained pub-goers for centuries. And not that we're biased or anything, but we're big fans. Better yet, with an excellent selection of Belhaven beers and beyond, you're guaranteed to find the perfect combination. For instance, a Belhaven Steak & Ale pie is always best enjoyed with a pint of Belhaven Best or Belhaven Scottish Ale. Or, if ale isn't your thing, rich, full-bodied red wines hold up exceptionally well against hearty fillings.

And if beer isn't your thing, don't worry! Our bars are also stocked with plenty of other drinks and alcohol-free tipples that pair just right with a hearty pie.

What's your pie order?

Here are some of the delicious pies you can enjoy in some of our Belhaven Pubs – make sure you check your chosen pub's menu before booking, as our range of pies can vary per venue. Nobody wants pie-based disappointment.

Belhaven Steak & Ale Pie

A timeless crowd-pleaser, our Belhaven Steak & Ale Pie is the epitome of "pub classic", with melt-in-the-mouth chunks of tender beef in a rich, Belhaven Ale gravy. Enjoy yours with either buttery mash or chips, depending on your mood, and wash it all down with a pint of the good stuff (the good stuff being one of our Belhaven beers).

Chicken, Bacon & Leek Pie

Some ingredients just complement each other perfectly, and this creamy pie is a prime example. Roast chicken breast, smoked streaky bacon and leeks, all swimming in a luxurious Béchamel sauce. A dinner table classic that ticks all the boxes – hot, comforting and bursting with flavour.
